Aston Villa have had an offer rejected for Nottingham Forest’s star man Britt Assombalonga as they look to add a proven Championship goalscorer to their squad, according to a report.

The 23-year-old has hit the ground running this season despite spending 14 months out with a knee injury, scoring three goals in three games.

The Bristol Post claim that the chase to sign the former Peterborough forward is still very much on, with Villa keen to sign a striker before the transfer deadline.

The knee injury suffered by Assombalonga meant that he managed just four appearances for Forest last term, who languished to a disappointing 16th without their star man.

Forest may want to keep their attacking spearhead though, after allowing teenage star Oliver Burke to join ambitious Bundesliga side RedBull Leipzig for £13million.

Assombalonga, who is eligible to represent both England and DR Congo, moved to Nottingham Forest in a £6million deal two years ago and scored 15 goals in 32 appearances before injuring his knee. He has hit the back of the net 19 times in total for Philippe Montanier’s side.

The former Watford striker first came to prominence with Peterborough, where he scored an impressive 33 goals in 58 appearances for the Posh in the 2013-14 season.

Roberto Di Matteo has already made seven signings this summer, spending almost £40million on players including Ross McCormack, James Chester and Aaron Tshibola.

Goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini also joined, along with Tommy Elphick, Mile Jedinak and Ritchie De Laet, as Di Matteo tries to return the Midlands clubs to the Premier League at the first attempt.
