West Ham have reportedly joined Manchester United and Chelsea in the race for Real Madrid playmaker James Rodriguez – and fans of the Hammers rival clubs were quick to dismiss the link as fantasy.

As reported on Football Insider, Rodriguez is unsure how he fits into Zinedine Zidane’s plans after slipping down Real’s pecking order last season and would consider a move if his £67million price tag is met.

It is claimed that West Ham are fighting with Euopean giants United, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain for the 25-year-old, but the highest offer on the table to date is £50million, £17million short of Real’s valuation.

West Ham may be in the market for an attacking midfielder as they look for cover for star-man Dimitri Payet with the added games next season due to making the qualifying rounds of the Europa League.

However, the Galacticos have also been linked with Payet this summer and there could be potential for a player exchange if the two clubs can agree on a deal.

Although, just seeing the club linked with players of Rodriguez’ ilk may excite some Hammers fans, while other fans of rival clubs have laughed off the report.

In other West Ham transfer news, the Hammers are close to announcing two new signings.
