Jamaal Lascelles has been hailed as a “big personality” by Rafael Benitez after being named the Newcastle captain – and supporters unanimously welcomed the decision.
The club revealed on their official website that the 22-year-old will lead the Magpies into their opening game of the Championship season against Fulham on Friday evening.
The news was met with appreciation by the Newcastle supporters, who backed their new leader despite his relative youth at 22.
Supporters were quick to praise the decision making of their manager who now has the task to guide the club back to the Premier League.
Newcastle fans thought that he was the perfect choice to lead them on that journey after impressing the supporters with his leadership and strength of character at the back-end of last season.
One supporter urged the hard-hitting defender to pull everyone in the right direction as fans demand more passion after relegation last term.
Here are the reactions of the Newcastle supporters on Twitter.

Lascelles is the best choice for captain, fully deserves it and it'll be nice to see a vocal captain on the pitch #nufc

…be counted in what was a dismal season. At 22 years old and show that character is testament to himself. Onwards and upwards! #NUFC
