Aston Villa fans have slammed Ciaran Clark on Twitter after he claimed the only way he could improve as a player was to leave the Midlands club this summer.
In an interview for The Times, as cited by the Birmingham Mail, the centre-back singled out Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez as a key reason for signing for the Championship club.
The 27-year-old made a £5million switch to St James’ Park earlier on in the summer, and Villa supporters haven’t taken kindly to their former player’s comments.
One fan stated that Villa have improved since Clark left and another said they’ve replaced him with better players.
Others wondered why Clark didn’t wait to see if new manager Roberto di Matteo could have helped the player out, although the consensus from the majority of Villa fans is that he was beyond help.

Clark saying he hasn't had much personal development the last few years. He played under Lambert, Garde and Black. Is it any wonder #avfc
