Aaron Ramsey has admitted that he is honoured to have been called the best attacking midfielder in the Premier League by Steven Gerrard.

The Liverpool legend is a firm fan of Ramsey and claimed in the wake of Arsenal’s Champions League masterclass on Wednesday night that there is no better player in the Welshman’s position in the English top flight.

Arsene Wenger’s team defeated Olympiakos 3-0 to seal a place in the Champions League knockout stages for the 16th consecutive season.

Ironically, Ramsey, who set up the opening goal for Olivier Giroud with a pinpoint cross from the left channel, had started in his favourite central position for only the third time this season.

He has been used predominantly on the right flank by Wenger over the last 12 months and was only used in the centre due to the Gunners’ crippling injury list.

“Mentally, I don’t think [Ramsey] will be happy himself playing out wide because he hasn’t got the legs,” Gerrard told BT Sport Europe on Wednesday night. “His qualities are all in the middle. For me when he’s in that form he’s the best attacking midfielder in the Premier League.

“You have got to pick your best players where they want to be and I’m sure he will want to be in the middle.”

Shortly after Arsenal’s victory, Ramsey took to Twitter to reveal how flattered he was by the assessment of one of the great attacking midfielders of the Premier League era.

The Wales international is set to be a key figure for Arsenal in the coming weeks as they cope without injured midfield quartet Santi Cazorla, Francis Coquelin, Jack Wilshere and Mikel Arteta.
