Alan Shearer declared it was “game on” in the relegation battle after Newcastle and Sunderland romped to convincing wins on Saturday.

Sam Allardyce’s team won 3-0 at fellow strugglers Norwich in the lunchtime kick-off to increase the pressure further on their bitter rivals.

But Newcastle responded with a 3-0 win of their own later in the afternoon, at home against Swansea, to secure the first victory of Rafael Benitez’s five matches in charge.

The two North-east clubs have narrowed the gap on 17th placed Norwich, with two of the three clubs seemingly destined to be playing in the Championship next season.

After hailing Sunderland’s “great result” earlier on Saturday, Newcastle legend Shearer then remarked upon the impact of his former side’s triumph.

“Well it’s game on at the bottom now! Great result for @nufc. Look forward to Tuesday where I’ll be at SJP,” wrote Shearer on his personal Twitter account.

Saturday’s results mean Newcastle have 28 points, Sunderland 30 points and Norwich 31 points, although the North-east pair both have a match in hand on Alex Neil’s team.

In other Newcastle news, the club have reportedly made a major decision about a first-team regular.
