Mesut Ozil has missed out on the 40-man shortlist for UEFA’s Team of the Year – and Arsenal fans on Twitter are baffled by his exclusion.

The 28-year-old playmaker, who supplied 19 assists in the 2015/16 Premier League season, missed out on a nomination, but his Gunners teammates Alexis Sanchez, Aaron Ramsey and Laurent Koscielny made the UEFA shortlist.

Supporters could not understand why the German international was not included despite his impressive performances last term.

Fans were also surprised that Stoke City’s Joe Allen, who was a standout performer for Wales at Euro 2016, was selected as one of 12 midfielders.

The Arsenal faithful even questioned how midfielder Ramsey was nominated, but his fellow teammate was not.

Understandably supporters were livid by the news as the final team will be voted by the fans on the UEFA website.

There were 11 Premier League players nominated, including the likes of Paul Pogba, Riyad Mahrez and Sergio Aguero.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Ozil scored eight goals and provided 20 assists in 45 appearances last season, including helping the north London club finish as runners-up in the league.

He also played six games for his home country, scoring one goal and supplying the same number of assists as they were knocked out of the semi-final of Euro 2016 by France.

This season, Ozil has scored seven goals and provided four assists in 15 Premier League and Champions League encounters.

In other Arsenal team news, Hector Bellerin has stated that he is very proud after he signed a new contract with the club.
