Borussia Mochengladbach have rejected Arsenal’s opening bid for Granit Xhaka.

The Bundesliga club revealed on their official website on Tuesday afternoon they have received an offer for the central midfielder.

However, sporting director Max Eberl said Borussia but have failed to reach an agreement with the potential buyer.

The German club did not disclose the identity of the club who made the bid but sources have told Football Insider it was submitted by Arsenal.

As revealed by Football Insider on Tuesday of last week, Arsenal are willing to pay £34million for Xhaka as well as hand him a five-year, £120,000-a-week contract.

The Switzerland international admitted on Saturday after his team’s final Bundesliga match of the season that he could have played his final game for the club.

Xhaka also revealed he would hold discussions with club chiefs about leaving the German outfit.

Tellingly, the Swiss sensation embraced his manager when he was substituted after 83 minutes into Saturday’s match against Darmstadt 98 and then stayed on for 15 minutes after the match hugging staff and clapping the fans.

“The season’s over now and there might be discussions tomorrow regarding the matter, we will make it together,” Xhaka told German publication Rheinische Post on Saturday. “The decision will definitely be before the European Championships.

“I’m the wrong person to be asked [about a possible move], you might need to check that with [sporting director] Max Eberl.

“[If I left the club], I’ll return to Borussia-Park [one day], but as I said, nothing is clear yet.”

Xhaka, 23, is on the target list of some of Europe’s biggest clubs this summer, with Liverpool and Bayern Munich also among his admirers.

But Arsenal are in pole position to land the central midfielder as they target a proven player who can dominate in the middle of the park.

The Gunners signed Mohamed Elneny from Basel in January and are now keen on another former player of the Swiss club.

Basel academy graduate Xhaka moved to Borussia Mochengladbach in 2012 for £6.75million and has developed into one of the Bundesliga’s outstanding midfielders.

He is a mainstay of the Mochengladbach side, making 35 appearances for the team this season.

In other Arsenal transfer news, the Gunners are expected to field a £25million offer for one of their star names.
