Marc Overmars believes that Arsene Wenger is the “best choice” to become the England manager.
Sam Allardyce agreed a mutual resignation last week with England following an undercover investigation into corruption in football.
Gareth Southgate has replaced him as temporary manager for England’s senior side for the next four matches.
Wenger celebrated 20 years at Arsenal on Saturday, with his contract at the Emirates set to expire at the end of the 2016/17 campaign.
The 66-year-old has won three English top-flight titles since his arrival in 1996 and has been an iconic imagine during the Premier League era.
Overmars, who played under Wenger at Arsenal, believes his former manager should land the permanent role for England.
“You need to know England. You need to know English football,” Overmars said, as quoted by website Football Qatar. “You have to understand the country and what goes around.
“He has known England for 20 years. He is the best choice, but you need the energy to do it.”
England have disappointed at major tournaments in recent years and were eliminated by minnows Iceland at Euro 2016.
Overmars believes that the experienced Wenger could change things for the England’s national side.
Despite last winning a league title in 2004, the former Monaco boss is widely regarded as one of the best managers in world football.
