Alex Iwobi has scored his first goal for Nigeria as they secured a priceless 2018 World Cup qualifying win against Namibia.

The 20-year-old took advantage of hesitation and a bouncing ball in the Zambia penalty area to lash home a half volley from 12 yards out, despite goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene getting a hand on the shot.

Nigeria doubled their lead just before half-time, as Manchester City star Kelechi Iheanacho took on the majority of the Zambia defence before finishing emphatically into an empty net. Zambia pulled one back after half time, but Iwobi and his team-mates held on to win.

The goal for Iwobi comes after rumours that he is set to be handed a new bumper deal at the Emirates after breaking into Arsene Wenger’s first-team plans.

Despite playing youth football for England up until the Under-18s, Iwobi opted to play for the Super Eagles after being born in Nigerian city Lagos.

Arsenal’s number 17 broke into the Gunners side last season, making 13 Premier League appearances and a further eight in cup competitions.

This season, manager Wenger has continued to place his faith in the youngster, with Iwobi making seven league and cup appearances.

There’s plenty of competition for Iwobi though, with the likes of Theo Walcott, Alexis Sanchez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all vying for a place on Arsenal’s flanks.

The versatile forward is set to feature for Arsenal against Swansea on Saturday, as the international break draws to a close.

In other Arsenal news, this Gunners star is the most creative player for his national side.
