Arsenal are targeting a late transfer window swoop for a world-class attacker, Football Insider sources understand.
Arsene Wenger is willing to bide his time and see who is available in the final weeks of the summer window.
Sources have told Football Insider that the Arsenal boss is in the market only for a forward who can immediately strengthen the first team.
Wenger is not currently working on a deal as he waits to see if any elite players become available, most likely at one of the top clubs.
His targets could depend upon a merry-go-round of transfers, much as it did when Real Madrid’s capture of Gareth Bale in 2013 paved the way for him to sign Mesut Ozil for a club-record £40million.
Football Insider revealed in May that Wenger was targeting a statement signing for the third consecutive summer after the landmark capture of Ozil was followed by Alexis Sanchez 12 months later.
Wenger wants a ‘special’ player to catapult his team to the next level and help them challenge strongly for next season’s Premier League title.
Arsenal have the funds in place to make another big splash in this year’s market and follow up the £11million signing of Petr Cech with another player who would be able to immediately enhance the first team.
As revealed by Football Insider, the London club are in the market for a ‘special forward player’ who can play in any of the front three positions and in the No10 role behind the spearhead.
With Theo Walcott’s future secure after he signed a new four-year contract, the Gunners are monitoring the situations of some top stars, and are prepared to spend around £40million-plus on the right player.
