Aston Villa defender Joe Bennett is set to undergo a Sheffield Wednesday medical ahead of a loan move, Football Insider sources understand.

The left-back has agreed a loan switch to the Championship club until the end of the season.

The 25-year-old is not in Remi Garde’s first-team plans and will now look to rebuild his career in the second tier of English football.

Bennett, who spent the first half of this season at Bournemouth, returned to Villa to compete for the left-back slot after Jordan Amavi was ruled out for the season.

But Garde decided that Aly Cissokho would be a better fit having got to know him during their time together at Lyon.

A source close to the situation has told Football Insider that a number of Championship clubs were interested in taking Bennett on loan but Wednesday have won the race.

Bennett has made only one League Cup appearance this season but he is a former England Under-21 international and has played 31 times in the Premier League as well as on 125 occasions in the Championship.

The Owls have triumphed in six of their last seven games and are currently sixth in the league, ten points behind leaders Middlesbrough.
