Aston Villa have joined the race for Liverpool attacker Luis Alberto, according to a report.

The Liverpool Echo claim that Alberto could be playing Championship football next season after the Villains expressed an interest in the 23-year-old.

The report says that Wolves and Queens Park Rangers are also keen to secure his services after a proposed move to his former club Sevilla fell through.

New Aston Villa boss Roberto Di Matteo will be looking to add firepower to his side as they seek an immediate return to England’s top-tier this season.

The Anfield outfit are believed to want £6million for the Spaniard that they bought from Spain in 2013 for £6.8million.

The former Malaga player spent last season on loan at Deportivo where he scored six goals and provided eight assists in 31 games across all competitions.

It is understood that despite returning to Melwood for the start of Liverpool’s pre-season, Alberto failed to impress Jurgen Klopp and was subsequently left out of the Merseyiders tour of America, leaving the door open for a move away from the club this summer.

Alberto has just one year remaining on his contract at Anfield, and Klopp is looking to cash in on the attack-minded player rather than losing him on a free.

The Spanish under-21 international has made just 12 appearances for Liverpool and has failed to find the back of the net on any occasion.

In other Liverpool transfer news, Mamadou Sakho did not have an argument with Klopp and is not joining Roma because of a dispute with his manager, according to the player’s agent.
