Aston Villa fans mocked Joleon Lescott with a chant ridiculing his post-match comments in the wake of the club’s relegation last weekend.

Lescott has been castigated by supporters for declaring following the 1-0 defeat to Manchester United that it was a relief for Villa to finally be relegated.

“Now it’s confirmed maybe it’s a weight off the shoulders and we can give these fans what they deserve – some performances,” the former England international told the BBC.

Supporters were enraged and there was a hostile atmosphere at Villa Park on Saturday as the home side slumped to a 10th consecutive defeat with a 4-2 loss to Southampton.

Lescott, who played the entire 90 minutes of the encounter, was singled out with the mocking chant, “It’s just a weight off your shoulders, weight off your shoulders”.

It is the latest in a series of stand-offs between the experienced defender and the frustrated fanbase.

In February, Lescott was the subject of fierce criticism from Villa supporters after he appeared to tweet a picture of a Mercedes worth £121,000 pounds less than 15 minutes after a humiliating 6-0 defeat at home by Liverpool.

The defender subsequently tweeted a statement saying that the picture was sent out accidentally, with his phone in his pocked while he was driving.

The 33-year-old wants to move on from Villa’s miserable campaign and focus on earning promotion back to the Premier League and said that he is happy to stay at the club if they want him to remain.

Villa’s defeat to Southampton was their 10th in a row in the league in a wretched season punctuated by regular fan protests against the club’s owner, Randy Lerner, and criticism of the players.
