Roberto Di Matteo named Tommy Elphick as the club’s new captain for the forthcoming season -and fans instantly got behind the decision.
The central-defender will take the armband from Gabby Agbonlahor, who was named club captain last season.
Elphick is a £3million summer signing from Premier League side Bournemouth, where he held the same role and helped guide them to the top-tier of English football for the first time in their history.
The 28-year-old was known for his strong and vocal performances at the heart of defence, with Villa fans confident he can replicate that for them.
As well as fans taking to Twitter, Elphick tweeted thanking everyone for their support.
Thank you for the messages huge honour ??

In general the fans’ messages were based around hope that Elphick can be the man to bring passion back into a side that disillusioned support last season.
