Gabriel Agbonlahor started for the Aston Villa Under-23s side on Monday evening against Blackburn – and fans were impressed on Twitter with the experienced attacker’s display.
The 30-year-old forward started for the youthful Villa team fresh off of a 10-minute substitute appearance against fierce rivals Birmingham on Sunday.
He played 63 minutes for the Midlands outfit in the 4-0 victory over Blackburn’s young team and provided two assists as Aaron Tshibola and Andre Green scored alongside a Rushian Hepburn-Murphy double.
Fans were delighted with Agbonlahor’s contribution with many keen to see their former captain return to his pervious form.
Here are a selection of their messages on Twitter:
Agbonlahor stepped down from his leadership role in April, after scoring just one goal in 18 appearances for the club last season in a disappointing campaign.
In the Championship he was frozen out by former manager Roberto Di Matteo before making his first appearance for the club this term on Sunday under new boss Steve Bruce.
Villa have struggled in England’s second tier so far and currently sit in 15th place and six points away from the play-off spots.
They will be keen to get a large number of their players performing, which includes Agbonlahor as they target an instant return to the Premier League.
In other Aston Villa news, this attacking ace will miss Saturday’s clash against Blackburn Rovers.
