Tim Sherwood has been appointed as Swindon’s new director of football – and Aston Villa fans on Twitter have reacted with surprise.

Sherwood had been linked with the manager’s job at QPR but has instead moved to the League One side and was presented to the media on Thursday afternoon.

The 47-year-old played with Robins chairman Lee Power at Norwich and had previously sent players to the County Ground on loan while at Tottenham.

Villa fans have reacted with shock on Twitter to Sherwood joining a League One club, particularly the fact that he has been installed as the director of football rather than manager.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Sherwood, who has also taken charge of Tottenham during a short managerial career, won a creditable 10 of his 28 league and cup encounters during his time at Villa Park.

Despite guiding Villa to runners-up in the 2014-15 FA Cup, Sherwood was replaced by Remi Garde in October of last year.
