Aston Villa star Idrissa Gueye is wanted by French giants Marseille, according to a report.

French outlet RMC Sport claim that the French side have seen an opportunity following the Villa Park side’s relegation from the Premier League.

The 26-year-old was one of the few players to emerge from Villa’s relegation season with his reputation intact and the Senegal international is wanted in France.

It is believed that Marseille are looking to bring in the midfielder and have made contact with his agents about the possibility of a move to the Stade Velodrome for their client and they believe that the former Lille man may be open to a return to France.

The Ligue 1 giants are said to favour a loan deal, with an option to buy for the central midfielder, but the player’s salary could prove a stumbling block.

He joined the Midlands side last summer, switching to the club from Lille in a £6.75million deal and signing a four-year contract.

Gueye, who is known as ‘Gana’ by supporters, has a £7.1million release clause in his deal.

He starred in 38 encounters for the Villa Park club in all competitions, but was unable to help the club fight off relegation from the Premier League.

In other Aston Villa news, Villa have expressed an interest in defender Jerome Onguene.
