Aston Villa midfielder Jordan Veretout is in talks to join French giants Marseille, according to a report.

French publication L’Equipe claim the Ligue 1 club are keen to sign the midfielder on a season-long loan.

The former Nantes player joined the Midlands club on a five-year deal last summer and was part of a group that was heavily criticised for their performances on the pitch as they were relegated into the second tier with only three wins to their name.

It is said Marseille, who finished way behind dominant Paris St- Germain last season, have spoken to the Championship side at length signing the former France under-21 international a year after his £8.3million transfer to Villa Park.

At this moment there has been no response from Villa, but discussions did continue on Saturday, where Veretout was part of the Villa squad that were victorious against non-league opposition.

The 25-year-old made 25 appearances for the club last season, but did find it tough cementing down a place in the team as the Midlands side went through three different managers.

As reported by Football Insider, Roberto Di Matteo is planning to trim his large squad, therefore it will be no surprise, if Veretout who failed to live up to the bill ends up leaving Villa Park.

Di Matteo’s side have already signed young midfielder Aaron Tshibola on a long-term deal with Carlos Sanchez agreeing a move to France and continued speculation over the future of Idrissa Gueye.

In other Aston Villa transfer news, the clubs experienced trio are axed from the starting line-up as Di Matteo gives his biggest hint yet that they are going to depart the club.
