Aston Villa striker Jordan Ayew has insisted he and new £1 million signing Ross McCormack need time to gel following the club’s 1-0 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday afternoon.
Villa lost their opening Championship fixture after Fernando Forestieri latched onto a goalkeeping mistake from Pierluigi Gollini to score late on for the hosts.
After a timid first-half for the visitors, Villa grew into the game into the second-half, with Ayew insisting the more game the attackers play with each other the better they will get.
“I thought Ross had a really good game,” said Ayew as quoted by the club’s official Twitter account. “We need some time to gel. He only arrived a few days ago.”
McCormack arrived from Championship rivals Fulham last week for a fee of £1 million having notched up 21-goals last season.
The Scottish international played 77 minutes on Sunday where in the second-half he was through on goal after a flick on from Rudy Gestede, but he was smothered out by the Wednesday defence who cleared.
But Ayew still saw the positives from the club’s opening loss and believed the team deserved more from the game.
“The first half was very difficult, we all know that,” said Ayew. “I think we did very well in the second half. We deserved at least a point.”
Villa supporters will be hoping the duo of Ayew and McCormack can build a formidable partnership in the second-tier as Roberto Di Matteo’s side aim for instant promotion back to the Premier League.
