Middlesbrough are considering a swoop for Aston Villa’s Brad Guzan with the Championship club close to finalising a deal for his supposed replacement, according to a report.
Pierluigi Gollini is thought to be on the verge of becoming an Aston Villa player raising doubts about Guzan’s future at the club.
The Daily Mail claim Premier League new boys Middlesbrough are ready to pounce on that uncertainty and have expressed an interest in the American, who is entering the final year of his contract at the club.
Guzan has spent the majority of the summer so far on international duty with the United States in their Copa America bow.
The goalkeeper was Jurgen Klinsmann’s first choice stopper at the tournament, but will not be interested in sitting on the bench for Villa next season, especially if he wants to remain his country’s No.1.
Roberto Di Matteo is thought to have met with Gollini over the weekend to outline his plans for the future and the Italy Under-2o international was said to have been impressed by the Villa’s boss’ vision.
Middlesbrough are on the lookout for players with Premier League experience and Guzan would fit that bill perfectly with 171 appearances for Villa in his eight years at the club.
The club’s interest in Guzan is reportedly hinging on Middlesbrough’s pursuit of former Manchester United goalkeeper Victor Valdes.
