Louis van Gaal has revealed Adnan Januzaj will not play for Manchester United’s Under-21 side against Reading on Monday night.
The Dutchman said last Friday the 20-year-old would start for the development team against Reading after having his loan deal at Borussia Dortmund cut short 24 hours earlier.
Van Gaal had said he wanted Januzaj to build up his fitness away from the first-team spotlight following a month without football.
But the United manager confirmed at his press conference on Monday he’s had a change of heart and Januzaj will not now feature for the Under-21s.
“We have reconsidered and we think we have to build him up for the game and not to risk too much by putting him in a match,” Van Gaal said.
The Belgian could yet be a surprise inclusion in the senior squad to face Newcastle at St James’ Park on Tuesday although Van Gaal has hinted he’s not match fit after last playing on 10 December.
The 20-year-old had a difficult time at Dortmund, where he made 12 appearances for the Bundesliga club, only three of which were starts. His six league outings were all as a substitute and he has not featured since a Europa League defeat by PAOK Salonika on 10 December.
