Barcelona sporting director Robert Fernandez has claimed summer signing Samuel Umtiti is a bargain compared to new Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi.

The Spanish giants purchased France centre-back Umtiti from Lyon for £21million during the summer, while Arsene Wenger paid a reported £35million to land German defender Mustafi from Valencia.

Fernandez believes the value of Umtiti, 22, would be even greater now than what they paid at the start of the summer, as fees exploded in the final month of the window.

“I think we’ve done good deals,” said Fernandez to Spanish publication Sport, as quoted by the Metro. “Umtiti in the current market would be worth a lot more.

“The Premier League [Arsenal] ended up paying 40 million Euros [£33.5m] for Mustafi, for example.”

Umtiti signed for Barcelona from French giants Lyon after making 170 appearances for the Ligue 1 club, with the youngster making his international debut for France in the quarter-finals of Euro 2016.

By contrast, versatile defender Mustafi made 81 appearances for Spanish outfit Valencia, before his big money move to the Emirates, with the German earning 13 caps on the international stage.

Wenger spent £88.1million on transfers this summer, most notably on Granit Xhaka, Mustafi and Lucas Perez.
