Danny Murphy believes Joel Matip is getting better for Liverpool every single week.
TV pundit Murphy, who was appearing on the BBC’s Match of the Day 2 programme on Sunday night, lauded the Reds as they thrashed Watford 6-1 to go top of the Premier League table.
Despite the sensational attacking play of Sadio Mane and company, one player who caught the eye of the former midfielder was Matip, who delivered another smooth display at centre-back.
“The one who is getting better week after week is Matip,” Murphy told Match of the Day 2 on Sunday night. “He’s looking the main man at the back.
“The question is who is going to play alongside. Lovren has been doing that although he was missing today and Lucas played.”
Matip began the campaign on the sidelines with an injury but has made a major impact in the Premier League after spending his entire career in the Bundesliga up until this season.
The Cameroon international, 25, has started nine of Liverpool’s league matches.
The Merseyside club now have 26 points after 11 games, one point ahead of Chelsea in second, who beat Everton 5-0 on Saturday.
Klopp’s side have also scored a league high of 30 goals in 11 Premier League games, four more than their nearest contenders Chelsea.
In other Liverpool team news, supporters on Twitter roasted Michael Owen as he celebrated the Reds 6-1 win over Watford.
