Newcastle discussed former Liverpool winger Jordan Ibe in recruitment meetings held by Rafael Benitez, according to a report.

Football Insider reported on Thursday that Ibe signed for the Bournemouth for a club-record £15million.

The Newcastle Chronicle claims that Ibe was mentioned in meetings involving Benitez but he never made any attempts to make the signing.

Ibe started last season in Liverpool’s first team and was given numerous opportunities to cement his position when Jurgen Klopp replaced Brendan Rodgers, but his progress stalled.

It became increasingly evident that Klopp wanted the wide man to depart Anfield after signing Sadio Mane from Southampton for around £35 million.

Newcastle were linked with the signing after selling Andros Townsend to Crystal Palace for £12.9million at the end of June.

The report says that Benitez isn’t specifically focusing on replacing Townsend, but does feel he needs to address problems in the attacking areas of his squad.

Midfielders Moussa Sissoko and Georginio Wijnaldum had been heavily linked with a move away from St. James Park, but Benitez said on Friday that he still hopes the pair will stay.

In other Newcastle news, these European giants have lined up a move that would break the Newcastle transfer record.
