Jamie Carragher has revealed he is an admirer of Liverpool-bound Sadio Mane but has admitted the fee is “expensive”.

The Anfield legend took to Twitter on Monday to give his verdict on the signing of the Senegal international from Southampton.

It was widely reported on Sunday night that Liverpool’s bid for the winger had been accepted by the Saints over the weekend, with most newspaper publications reporting the fee at £30million.

However, the reliable Sky Sports claimed on Monday morning that the two clubs have in fact agreed a deal at £34million rising to a possible £36million.

The well-connected Carragher, who is one of Sky Sports’ leading pundits, claimed the fee was actually £30million and that Southampton had briefed some journalists on “a much higher price”.

The £36m figure would make Mane the most expensive signing in Liverpool’s history, ahead of Andy Carroll, who joined for £35million in January 2011, and Christian Benteke, who cost £32.5million from Aston Villa.

Responding to one Twitter follower, Carragher claimed Liverpool did not get good value with the Carroll deal five years ago.

Mane was pictured on Merseyside on Monday entering a hospital to undertake medical examinations before he was due to negotiate personal terms with Liverpool chiefs.

The 24-year-old will become Liverpool’s fourth signing over the summer after Joel Matip (free from Schalke), Marko Grujic, whose £5m switch from Red Star Belgrade was agreed in January, and goalkeeper Loris Karius from Mainz.

In other Liverpool transfer news, the Merseysiders have tabled a £7million bid for a Premier League wonderkid.
