Jamie Carragher hailed Liverpool centre-backs Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren as “outstanding” in the 0-0 draw against Manchester United on Monday night.

The defenders nullified the visitors’ attack and reduced them to just a single Zlatan Ibrahimovic opportunity, which he headed wide.

Liverpool blew the opportunity to join Manchester City at the Premier League summit but kept their first clean sheet of the season in the competition at the eighth attempt.

Sky Sports pundit and Anfield legend Carragher was impressed with how Matip and Lovren handled United striker Ibrahimovic.

“I thought Liverpool’s centre-backs dealt with him really well, they were outstanding tonight,” Carragher told Sky Sports’ live coverage in the immediate aftermath of the match.

“A big bonus for Liverpool is the clean sheet and the partnership of the centre-backs.”

The draw means that Jurgen Klopp’s side remain fourth in the table although they are only two points behind leaders City.

By contrast, United are in seventh and five points behind Pep Guardiola’s pacesetters.

In other Liverpool news, former Everton midfielder Leon Osman gave a no-holds-barred verdict on Wayne Rooney slipping down the United pecking order on Monday.
