Senior pair Wayne Rooney and Marouane Fellaini are set to be omitted from the Manchester United team for Monday’s mouthwatering clash against Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s team have been tipped to provide United’s toughest challenge so far and, in order to contain the home side’s varied attacking threat, Michael Carrick could come into the starting XI.

Jose Mourinho has plenty of options available and with the fixture being played on Monday evening, he hopes to have all his international stars available according to the club’s official website.

With 25 players available, it’s likely Mourinho will make some changes to the side which faced Stoke City, as he will want to add more defensive solidity to his side.

Rooney is expected to be on the bench, after being side-lined for England’s clash against Slovenia on Tuesday evening.

In addition to Carrick, Paul Pogba is expected to start despite featuring heavily for France during the international break though Ander Herrera’s position could be in question.

It’s likely he’ll start his third consecutive game though, with Carrick providing better support than Fellaini did when Herrera was isolated against Manchester City.

Juan Mata is likely to feature on the United right-wing and Anthony Martial could be given the nod ahead of Marcus Rashford on the left due to his impressive record against Liverpool.

Martial has scored two goals in four appearances against the Reds and the composure he demonstrated on his United debut against the Merseysiders could be crucial on Monday evening.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic will undoubtedly start up front and will be hoping to receive regular service from United’s full-backs Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia who are also expected to start.

Daley Blind should miss out, with Shaw being the preferred choice due to his pace but Eric Bailly and Chris Smalling will likely line-up in the two centre-back positions.

David De Gea will be in the sticks to complete the starting XI as Mourinho’s side hope to prevent Liverpool’s explosive attack.

In other Manchester United news, Daniel Sturridge is axed as we predict the best possible Liverpool XI to face United on Monday.
