Petr Cech has praised defensive duo Rob Holding and Calum Chambers despite Arsenal’s defence leaking four goals against Liverpool.
Holding made his competitive Gunners debut alongside his fellow England Under-21 international in the heart of the defence, but Liverpool’s attacking threat proved too much as the Gunners slumped to a 4-3 opening weekend defeat.
Wenger was forced to turn to his inexperienced defenders due to an injury crisis, with Gabriel and Per Mertesacker absent through long-term injuries and Frenchman Laurent Koscielny not yet match fit.
Chambers got on the score sheet for the Gunners with a header from a set-piece but the youthful English duo were part of a backline that was torn to shreds by Liverpool either side of half-time as Jurgen Klopp ran riot with four goals.
“They [Holding and Chambers] did really well,” said Cech to the Evening Standard.
“You cannot be happy because you should not concede four goals at home, but I thought it was a really good experience for them.”
Holding made 30 appearances last term and was a shining light in Bolton’s wretched campaign that ended in relegation to League One.
The 20-year-old was named Bolton’s Player of the Year last season, and was part of Gareth Southgate’s tournament-winning under-21 this summer.
Meanwhile, Chambers starred in 25 encounters for the Gunners in all competitions last season.
The centre-back, who can also cover the right-back position has made 58 appearances for the north London club since joining from Southampton in 2014.
The duo will face stiff competition from the current crop of Arsenal centre-backs to keep a first-team place when they are all fit, but for the mean time they could play a key role in the club’s early league campaign.
