Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has revealed how impressed he has been by Joe Allen at this summer’s European Championships.

The 26-year-old midfielder has delivered a string of impressive performances at Euro 2016 as surprise package Wales made it to the semi-finals before they lost 2-0 against Portugal on Wednesday evening.

His form in France is unlikely to surprise Liverpool fans after the way in which Allen improved since Jurgen Klopp replaced axed Rodgers back in October.

Rodgers managed Allen at Swansea before taking the midfielder to Anfield in a £16million deal back in 2012 and dropped a hint that he could make a third attempt to sign the 26-year-old.

“And Joe Allen, I’ve always said is a top class midfield player and is starting to show it,” said the Bhoys boss to the Daily Record.

The former Reading manager has been linked with another move for Allen, whose contract expires next summer.

However, it is thought that the midfielder may have other offers on his table following his exploits in France.

Allen is said to be open to a move and he wants to play more regular first-team football after struggling to hold down a starting place under Jurgen Klopp.

The central midfielder’s future is unlikely to be resolved until after he returns to Anfield.

The midfielder has played 129 games for Liverpool and it remains unclear what role he might have under Klopp but his energy and neat passing have won admirers from across Europe.

In other Celtic news, Brendan Rodgers believes Moussa Dembele has already shown what his greatest strengths are.
