Celtic have opened talks over a sensational move to sign Juventus’ technician Hernanes, according to a report.

The 31-year-old is expected to leave the Italian Champions before the transfer deadline after the signing of Miralem Pjanic pushed him further down the attacking midfield pecking order.

Italian publication Calcio Mercato revealed that the 27-time Brazil international could be tempted to join Celtic, with the offer of Champions League football on the table.

The former Lazio star has made just 23 appearances since joining Massimiliano Allegri’s side last summer, after playing second fiddle to Paul Pogba last year.

According to the report, Celtic were the first to enquire for Juve’s number 11 and both parties are keen to see a deal completed for the playmaker.

The Brazilian star has less than two years remaining on his contract with the Bianconeri, but is unlikely to feature this season on a regular basis as the likes of Claudio Marchisio, Stefano Sturaro and Mario Lemina keep him sidelined.

Celtic are looking to add Champions League quality to their squad as they prepare to face Barcelona, Manchester City and Borussia Monchengladbach in Group C.

The Hoops have already made five signings this season, bringing in teenagers Moussa Dembele and Kritoffer Ajer, while experienced duo Dorus de Vries and Kolo Toure have signed on free transfers. Aston Villa’s Scott Sinclair has hit the ground running following his move, finding the back of the net four times already.

In other Celtic transfer news, this winger has rejected a move to his old side in favour of fighting for a place at Parkhead.
