This news comes after the former Newcastle player signed off for stress on Tuesday morning after returning to Rangers training following his club suspension.
Now it seems his career with Mark Warburton’s side is set to come to an end and Old Firm rivals Celtic have definitely seen the funny side to this saga.
Supporters have jokingly urged their rivals to name the controversial midfielder as their player of the year.
While one fan pointed out that he cannot remember a more embarrassing spell for a footballer then the one Barton has just been involved in.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:
Interesting to hear Scott Browns thoughts on Joseph Barton situation. Something like this id imagine. pic.twitter.com/5avT9Br6yU

The 34-year-old made eight appearances for the Glasgow giants in his first spell in Scottish football.
But before his career at Rangers began it is set to come to an abrupt end following his involvement in a training ground incident after the 5-1 Old Firm defeat to rivals Celtic in September.
In other Celtic team news, former Dundee defender Matt Lockwood has claimed this Hoops player reminds him of Robbie Fowler.
