Celtic fans have reacted with delight on Twitter after Brendan Rodgers initiated a move for Everton midfielder James McCarthy.
But they are sceptical whether the Scottish giants will be able to secure a deal for the 25-year-old even though the club are set to receive a £30million windfall from qualifying for the Champions League group stages.
The Daily Mail claim that manager Brendan Rodgers has initiated a move to bring McCarthy to Parkhead and win the race for the player ahead of Sunderland, Watford, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Championship big hitters Newcastle.
Republic of Ireland international McCarthy has slipped down the central midfield pecking order at Goodison Park following the signing of Aston Villa star Idrissa Gueye.
Fans are very keen for Rodgers to bring in the midfielder, who has experience of Scottish football after coming through the academy at Hamilton. Despite opting to play for Ireland, former Wigan man McCarthy was born in Glasgow.
Here are a selection of the Hoops’ fans tweets:
McCarthy has been a mainstay in the Everton side following his £13million move from Wigan three years ago, and has four years remaining on his Goodison Park deal.
In the last three seasons, the former Hamilton star has made 113 league and cup encounters for the Toffees and has since become popular among the Merseyside club’s fanbase.
In other Celtic transfer news, Nigeria international Efe Ambrose could be about to leave to this Championship club.
