Rangers have terminated the contract of midfielder Joey Barton – and Celtic fans have reacted quickly on Twitter to mock their rivals.

The 34-year-old has finally ended his torrid stay at Ibrox after a spate of negative incidents with the club.

The Scottish Sun have claimed that Rangers will pay the Englishman £250,000 to leave because his deal was set to expire in the summer of 2018.

Rangers have confirmed on their official website that Barton is no longer their player and refused to comment on any settlements.

“Rangers and Joey Barton have agreed to terminate his contract with immediate effect. Neither Rangers nor Joey Barton will comment further,” Rangers wrote on their official Twitter account.

Celtic supporters have been quick to laugh about Barton’s situation at the expense of their Old Firm rivals.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Barton was first suspended by Rangers in September after a bust-up with Andy Halliday in training, which took place in the wake of the humiliation 5-1 defeat to Old Firm rivals Celtic.

His exile continued following allegations from the Scottish Football Association that he broke betting rules between 1 July and 15 September, with the 34-year-old scheduled to face a judicial panel on 17 November.

He leave Rangers having made just eight appearances for the club and he failed to register a goal or an assist.

In other Celtic news, the club’s supporters have respond on Twitter after Gordon Strachan handed their former player an international call-up.
