Demebele made the somewhat surprising decision to join Celtic this week after being linked with the likes of Tottenham and Bayern Munich and Roberts admitted he got straight on his phone after he heard rumours linking his former teammate to Parkhead.
“I played with Moussa for many years at Fulham in the youth team,” said Roberts speaking to the Scottish Sun. “He used to take me to and from training and it will be nice to link up with him again.
“I know exactly what he’s capable of and the same goes for him, so maybe that swayed it.
“I texted him the other day when I saw the story. He got back to me yesterday, saying ‘I signed’.
“He actually sent me a picture of my shirt in the changing room! It was funny. It was a shock but it’s good to have him in the squad.
“Moussa will bring a lot. He’s strong, quick and scores a lot of goals.”
Roberts is currently six months into 18-month loan deal from Manchester City and has returned to pre-season with Celtic fans excited at what the youngster can produce after making an excellent early impression in Scotland.
However, the winger has insisted supporters should be more excited about the prospect of Leigh Griffiths and Dembele up front for Celtic.
Griffiths scored 40 goals in all competitions last season while Dembele struck 15 times in the Championship.
Roberts expects to be the one supplying the assists for the pair this season and says Celtic will not have any issues regarding goals in the future.
He said: “Having him and Leigh up front will be dynamic and I’m sure there will be a lot of goals.
“I’ll probably set up a few of them so it will be good to team up once again at Celtic.”
