Wigan Athletic will turn their attention to Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton if they fail in a bid to land Hearts defender Callum Paterson, according to a report.
The Scottish Sun claim that the Latics had a bid of £700,000 rejected for Paterson – £400,000 up front with £300,000 in add-ons and a 20% sell-on clause. The Jambos are reportedly holding out for £1.2million.
It is said that Wigan manager Gary Caldwell will remain undeterred in his search for a right-back and has shortlisted Villa defender Alan Hutton.
The 50-time Scotland international has fallen down the pecking order at Villa Park following the signing of Premier League champion Ritchie De Laet from Leicester City.
The former Tottenham right-back could be available in a cut-price deal, with less than 12 months remaining on his contract at the Midlands club.
Hutton, who has also has had a spell in Spain with Mallorca, has made more than 100 appearances for the Villans after making his 101st appearance in the EFL Cup first-round loss to Luton Town.
Manager Caldwell knows Hutton well from their time together with the national side, and Hutton is believed to be interested in a switch to the Latics.
Aston Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo has orchestrated a Villa Park revamp by allowing 13 senior players to leave this summer.
Idrissa Gueye, Ciaran Clark and Scott Sinclair have left for fees, while Charles N’Zogbia and Kieran Richardson have been released.
In other Aston Villa transfer news, this defender could also be about to move to Turkey as Trabzonspor look to beat Premier League side Hull to his signature.
