Federico Fazio has joined Roma from Tottenham on a loan-to-buy deal, it was announced on Wednesday night -and there has been a mixed response from Tottenham fans on Twitter.

The Argentine defender, 29, has joined initially on a season-long loan that will cost Roma £1million and could make the move permanent in a £2.7million deal in a year’s time.

Fazio originally joined Tottenham from Spanish club Sevilla in the summer of 2014 for a transfer fee of £8million but will now play his football away from White Hart Lane.

There was little surprise at Fazio’s exit and some were happy that a fringe player has opened up space in the squad for someone else, but a few claimed the Argentina international was under-rated.

Here are a selection of the Twitter messages from fans:

His exit from the club comes even though centre-back Jan Vertonghen was ruled out for a minimum of eight weeks with an ankle injury sustained playing for Belgium at Euro 2016 last month.

Toby Alderweireld and Kevin Wimmer will likely form a partnership in the heart of the Spurs defence in Vertonghen’s absence but the club lack senior cover in the position, and could be reliant upon inexperienced youth team players.
