Charlie Nicholas believes that Tottenham will narrowly overcome Monaco in the Champions League.

Spurs host the French side at Wembley on Wednesday night and met their opponents in the Europa League group stages last season.

They recorded a comfortable 4-1 victory at White Hart Lane and earned a point away at Monaco, which was enough to see them progress from the group.

However Monaco have begun their league campaign in impressive form and top the Ligue 1 table, after defeating Paris Saint-Germain and Lille in their last two matches.

Sky Sports pundit Nicholas believes that Spurs will win the latest encounter 2-1 after impressing on Saturday against Stoke, with Harry Kane to open the scoring.

“I think they’re stronger than when Spurs beat them last season, but I must admit that Spurs produced a big display at the weekend,” he wrote in his column. “Up with Arsenal’s performance against Watford and a couple of first halves from Man City, that performance at Stoke was up there with the most impressive in the Premier League so far.

“Mauricio Pochettino acknowledged that they’re starting to get over last season, especially with Harry Kane getting a goal.”

Spurs cruised to a comfortable 4-0 win in the Premier League away at Stoke and Kane opened his goal scoring account for the season.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side will be aiming to balance European and domestic football this year, with summer recruits Moussa Sissoko, Victor Wanyama and Vincent Janssen all recruited to bolster the squad.

Spurs and Monaco have been drawn together again in this season’s Champions League alongside CSKA Moscow and Bayer Leverkusen.

In other Tottenham team news, the stats prove that the club are Premier League top guns at developing talent.
