Everton may have to make plans to replace Romelu Lukaku this summer as talks for a new contract appear to have stalled, according to a report.
According to the Times, Lukaku has failed to agree on a new deal at Goodison Park during the last two transfer windows.
That, despite his agent Mino Raiola claiming that “99.9% of terms had been agreed” on a contract extension worth £140,000 a week in December.
Chelsea have been repeatedly linked with bringing the 23-year-old back to Stamford Bridge.
The Belgian striker proved on Saturday that he is one of the Premier League’s best strikers as he hit four past Bournemouth in a 6-3 victory that leaves him top of the league’s goal scoring charts.
He has found the net on 16 occasions in the league and has scored seven goals in his last six games for Everton.
Lukaku has been at Goodison Park since moving from Chelsea in 2014 for a club record fee of £28million.
The former Anderlecht man failed to score a single goal in his time at Stamford Bridge but impressed on loan spells at West Bromwich Albion and Everton, before the latter decided to sign him on a permanent deal.
Footballer Inisder verdict:
Lukaku left Chelsea because he wasn’t getting anywhere near the amount of first-team football he should have. His loan spells at West Brom and Everton showed that he had what it took to be a top-flight striker but Chelsea still failed to give him much-needed game time.
However a few years later and things may have changed. Conte has one world-class striker in Diego Costa and this move will ultimately depend on his future, because it’s doubtful that either the Spaniard or Lukaku will want to play second fiddle to the other. Everton fans will want a new deal for Lukaku, but it’s obvious that the striker is destined for greater things. A move in the summer is looking increasingly likely.
