Chris Sutton has stated on Twitter that Everton were “brilliant tonight” as they recorded a 2-1 win against title-chasers Arsenal at Goodison Park.

Defenders Chris Coleman and Ashley Williams cancelled out Alexis Sanchez’ opener as Ronald Koeman’s side picked up their first win since October.

Forward Sanchez gave the north London club an early lead, before right-back Coleman levelled the scoring just before the break.

Four minutes from time centre-back William powered home a late header to send the home fans into party mode as they recorded a much-needed three points.

After the game, former Premier League winner Sutton was full of praise for the home side on his personal Twitter account, but he was also critical of Arsene Wenger’s men.

The result against the Gunner means Everton remain in seventh place on 23 points from 16 games.

But they have now closed the gap on those above them, with Manchester United one point and one place ahead of the Toffees – they play Crystal Palace on Wednesday night.

Prior to this fixture the Merseyside club had only picked up one victory in ten games, but they have changed their fortunes around against a side that had won their previous three fixtures.

For the Gunners their chances of going top were dented as they remain in second place on 34 points from 16 matches, three behind leaders Chelsea who travel to the north east to take on Middlesbrough on Wednesday.
