Stan Collymore believes that Chelsea’s spending power has produced a “chasm” between Antonio Conte’s side and the Reds.
The former Liverpool player turned outspoken pundit believes that the summer additions of N’Golo Kante, David Luiz and Michy Batshuayi has created a gap between the Stamford Bridge side and their Premier League counterparts.
Collymore did point out Liverpool’s purchase of Sadio Mane for £34million from Southampton in the summer.
However, writing in his column for the Mirror, he did state that he couldn’t see either Manchester clubs or Chelsea going in for the Senegal international.
“Pep Guardiola has a huge and talented squad at Manchester City, plus a bottomless pit of money,” wrote Collymore. “Likewise, Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, where he has spent a bundle of cash since being appointed in July. Same for Chelsea newcomer Antonio Conte.
“The Italian has added N’Golo Kante, David Luiz and Michy Batshuayi to a team which, 18 months ago was crowned Premier League champions.
“And that shows the chasm between Klopp’s Liverpool side and theirs.
“Yes, he spent big on taking Sadio Mane to Anfield from Southampton in the summer.
“But would either of the Manchester clubs or Chelsea have gone for him? I’m not so sure.”
Mane spent two years at Premier League rivals Southampton before his move to Anfield.
He was tormenting defences on the south coast, which brought Jurgen Klopp’s attention to him scoring 25 goals in 75 encounters in all competitions.
The attacker has been deployed on the right hand side of a three-man attack by Klopp and he has already forged a great partnership within the Liverpool team.
The Reds face Chelsea on Friday and Mane will be expected to line-up in Liverpool’s attack once again, while the Blues are without leader John Terry with David Luiz stepping in following his return.
In other Liverpool team news, Chris Kirkland believes that Loris Karius should replace Simon Mignolet when the Reds face Chelsea.
