Mallorca have signed Arsenal youth star Julio Pleguezuelo on a season-long loan, according to a report.

The centre-back, who came through the Barcelona academy set-up, has been at the core of the Arsenal youth sides he has played for but has struggled to break into the first-team set-up.

Spanish newspaper Diario de Mallorca claim Pleguezuelo was snapped up by the second-tier Spanish side on Tuesday but the deal has yet to be confirmed by either club.

The report says the Gunners U21 captain has joined Mallorca on a season-long loan without the option to make the move permanent.

It is said that ‘secretive and quick’ talks were held on Tuesday and that the manner of the talks allowed for a deal to be agreed quickly despite a other clubs showing interest.

Pleguezuelo has been praised in the past for his composure on the ball and as a good reader of the game, but his performance levels dipped a little last season.

He will now hope that a run of competitive football in the Segunda Division can earn him the chance of playing under Arsene Wenger in the Gunners first team.

Pleguezuelo becomes the latest Arsenal player to be sent out on loan, with Ryan Huddart, Dan Crowley and Jon Toral also spending time elsewhere.
