Liverpool have taken 16-year-old defender Mauricio Quinonez on trial with a view to signing him, his club confirmed on Tuesday.

The teenager, currently playing for Independiente del Valle, has come to the attention of Anfield scouts after impressing in youth tournaments for Ecuador.

The Reds have given the youngster a 12-day trial and he will initially join the Liverpool Under-21s at their preseason training camp in Germany.

Independiente del Valle confirmed the trial via their Twitter account as they posted an image of the player on a flight bound for Germany.

It read: “Mauri Flights to Germany at the invitation of Liverpool.”

The teenager is regarded as one of the brightest young talents in Ecuador and if he performs in his brief time at the club, he could be offered a permanent move to Anfield.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has already made several high profile summer additions including Sadio Mane, Loris Karius, Joel Matip and Marko Grujic.

In other Liverpool news, the club could miss out on a key summer target after AC Milan agreed a £16million fee with Udinese for midfielder Piotr Zielinski.
