Manchester United have reached an agreement to sign Felipe Anderson for £47million, according to Lazio president Claudio Lotito.
As revealed by Football Insider, the Premier League giants dispatched scouts to watch the Brazilian attacker on Sunday and have closely watched him in recent months.
Now, Lotitio has been reported by Italian publication Il Messaggero as telling colleagues on Sunday that a deal has been struck with United for the winger to move in the summer.
“I signed Felipe Anderson for €8m and have already re-sold him for €60m,” Lotito reportedly said. “Next year he’ll go to Manchester United.”
The Serie A side’s chairman met with journalists ahead of the second division clash between Salernitana and Crotone.
Lotito was at the game representing Salernitana – his son in law is their president – and while journalists were expecting team or injury news, they were surprised to learn of the deal.
United’s pursuit of Anderson was unsuccessful in January as the Premier League giants were only willing to pay £30million up front, while Lazio wanted €50million – the equivalent of £39million – in an initial payment and no add-ons.
However, United have not given up hope of landing the 22-year-old and assessed him in Sunday’s Serie A clash against Frosinone, which Lazio won 2-0.
The 22-year-old, who transferred from Santos in the summer of 2013, signed a new contract last March that runs until the summer of 2020.
Anderson has scored seven goals and supplied four assists in his 34 appearances for Lazio this season.
United manager Louis van Gaal has said one of the team’s priorities is to recruit a mobile wide forward capable of getting in behind defences and creating and scoring goals.
This is the case regardless of the position of the first-team manager, with Jose Mourinho in line to replace Van Gaal at the end of the season.
Anderson, who was earned one cap for the Brazil national team, is predominantly used on the left flank by his club.
Van Gaal’s side have struggled to create and score goals this season despite vast investment in the squad over the last two years.
In other Manchester United transfer news, the club are also monitoring Inter Milan striker Mauro Icardi.
