Newcastle have made three changes to their starting XI against Sheffield Wednesday for the Championship Boxing Day meeting.

Manager Rafa Benitez has decided to bring in Vurnon Anita, Jack Colback and Yoan Gouffran to the line-up.

This has resulted in attacker Christian Atsu, Jonjo Shelvey and DeAndre Yedlin dropping out of the eleven.

Newcastle announced their side on their official Twitter account ahead of the Monday evening meeting.

Newcastle have won three of their last three Championship fixtures, helping to establish their dominance over the league.

However, Brighton remain hot on their heels in second place with one point separating them from the leading Toon.

The Magpies Monday opponent’s will also prove a stern test for the north east giants with Sheffield Wednesday currently in sixth.

The Yorkshire club will have targeted a play-off place this season after the sixth placed finish of the last campaign.

Newcastle and Wednesday are currently separated by five places and 12 points in the league.

The two sides last met in the Championship during the 2009-10 season, but they did face each other at St James’ Park in the League Cup in September 2015.

The Owls ran out winners in the meeting with Lewis McGugan’s 76th minute goal proving decisive in his team’s 1-0 victory.
