Mousa Dembele has claimed that emerging Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks is going to be something special.
Academy product Winks was handed his second Premier League start in Spurs’ 2-1 Premier League victory over Burnley on Saturday and delivered an encouraging display in central midfield alongside established pairing Dembele and Victor Wanyama.
It was the latest step in what has been a richly promising campaign from the 20-year-old, who has been a regular member of the 18-man matchday squad this season.
Winks has made 16 appearances in all competitions for the senior team this season, six of which have been starts.
“I think he did very well again in the Burnley match,” said Dembele, as quoted by the official Tottenham website. “Last year, even though he didn’t play too much, we saw that he had a lot of potential and I’m glad for him that he’s been getting some opportunities and his ability is coming out on the pitch now.
“He’s making progress as a young player but he’s a good guy as well so everybody appreciates him and wants him to succeed.”
Winks, an England Under-21 international, marked his full debut against West Ham on 19 November with a goal in the 3-2 victory for Pochettino’s men.
Prior to this season, the Spurs youngster had made just three appearances for the club, all of which were in the Europa League.
He is in contention to start for Tottenham in their next game, a league encounter against Southampton on 28 December.
In other Tottenham news, fans have reacted after the club agreed the terms of a 21-year-old move in January.
