Liverpool star Danny Ings is set to be ruled out for the rest of the season as he undergoes an operation to repair his right knee.
The former Burnley forward has been sidelined for more than a year following his move to the Merseyside giants, but returned to first-team action in the EFL Cup against Tottenham from the substitutes bench.
However, Goal.com’s Liverpool correspondent Melissa Reddy has revealed on her personal Twitter account that Ings is set to miss the remainder of the season as he goes under the knife.
More than a year ago, the one-time England international tore his anterior cruciate ligament in Jurgen Klopp’s first training session in charge and has been sidelined since.
But to heartfelt applause, Ings looked to have put his injury demons behind him as he made a cameo appearance against Spurs in the fourth round of the EFL Cup as Daniel Sturridge’s brace earned Liverpool a 2-1 victory.
The 24-year-old looked sharp and almost scored a spectacular goal on his return, instead stinging the palms of Spurs stopper Michel Vorm.
However, Ings will now miss the rest of the season.
