Roberto Di Matteo has revealed that the Aston Villa atmosphere is the worst he has ever experienced in his career.
Villa have begun the new season with defeats at Sheffield Wednesday and fourth-tier side Luton Town following their wretched Premier League campaign that ended in relegation.
Di Matteo, 46, admitted that he has never witnessed such a negative atmosphere during his lengthy playing and managerial career, but was adamant that the mind-set of the group was changing.
“Personally I’ve never experienced it, neither as a player or manager,” said Di Matteo as quoted by Sky Sports. “There is definitely a mind-set that needs to be changed here. We are doing better, I can see the signs of improvement, but the best recipe is to get a good positive result.”
“The sooner the win comes, the better it is for the players confidence, the team confidence and the whole environment.”
The Italian took charge of the club in June after new owner Tony Xia gave the former Chelsea boss the responsibility to guide the club back to the Premier League.
Despite a tough start Di Matteo heads into his managerial home debut against Rotherham on Saturday afternoon looking for his first win.
