Didi Hamann believes Sadio Mane’s late winner for Liverpool in the Merseyside derby could be “a defining moment” come May.

The Reds are aiming to clinch their first English League title in nearly three decades, with manager Jurgen Klopp the driving force behind that challenge.

Klopp’s side beat their neighbours Everton 1-0 on Monday night, thanks to a stoppage time winner from summer signing Mane.

The three points at Goodison Park pushed Liverpool up to second in the Premier League table, six points behind leaders Chelsea.

TV pundit Hamann provided his verdict on his former club aiming for the title and how important Mane’s goal could prove to be.

“Three points in the Merseyside derby is always important – but to snatch it in stoppage time will give the club a huge morale boost,” Hamann told Paddy Power, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.

“Liverpool have to win these tight games and Sadio Mane’s goal could be a defining moment come May – if Liverpool can put a run together and stay within touching distance [of Chelsea], they have a live chance as the season wears on.”

Klopp’s side are on 37 points from 17 games as they gear up for an important and crucial festive period.

Former Dortmund boss Klopp has introduced a high pressing game to the club and that style of play will be tested over the next fortnight.

The Merseyside club host Stoke on December 27, they then face title rivals Manchester City four days later, before travelling to the north east to take on Sunderland on January 2.

Klopp will be hoping summer signing Mane, who will head off to the Africa Cup of Nations in mid-January, can help them to success over a crucial period of the season.

The Senegal international has scored an impressive eight goals in 16 league games, providing five assists along the way.
