Christian Atsu has joined Newcastle on a loan-to-buy deal from Chelsea, it was announced on Wednesday night.

The Magpies confirmed on their official website and Twitter account that the 24-year-old had secured a deadline-day move to the Tyneside outfit.

Atsu has transferred from Chelsea on loan until the end of the season, with an option for Newcastle to make the move permanent next summer.

The young forward spent the second half of last season on loan at Spanish side Malaga, where he scored four goals in 24 matches.

Atsu, who joined Chelsea in 2013, has also had loan spells at Everton, Vitesse and Bournemouth but is yet to make a single senior appearance for the Premier League big hitters.

The Ghana international,  who was voted the Best Player of the African Cup of Nations in 2015, has now entered into the final two years of his contract at Stamford Bridge.

Newcastle have landed Atsu after winger Rolando Aarons was ruled out for eight weeks with a fractured metatarsal suffered against Cheltenham Town in the EFL Cup last week.

Benitez has already lost attacking wingers Andros Townsend, Florian Thauvin and Remy Cabella and Euro 2016 finalist Moussa Sissoko this summer.

In other Newcastle transfer news, pundit Paul Merson was appalled at the deadline day conduct of Moussa Sissoko.
